Temple Bar Gallery & Studios kuraattoriresidenssi syksyllä 2011 Dublinissa
20 December 2010

tbgs_logo_initials1

Temple Bar Gallery and Studios (TBG&S), Suomen Lontoon instituutti ja HIAP julistavat haettavaksi kuraattoriresidenssin Dublinissa syyskuussa 2011.

Valinnasta ilmoitetaan maaliskuun lopussa.

Kuraattori saa käyttöönsä yksiön ja työhuoneen Dublinin keskustasta ja 1000 euron suuruisen kuukausistipendin lisäksi hänen matkakustannuksensa korvataan. Lisäksi Suomen Dublinin suurlähetystö kustantaa kuraattorille hänen aikatauluistaan riippuen loppukeväästä 2011 kaksi-kolmipäiväisen vierailun Dubliniin, jonka tarkoituksena on saada ensikosketus kaupunkiin ja sen taidekenttään, ja helpottaa näin prosessia varsinaisen residenssikuukauden osalta.

Residenssinsä aikana kuraattori työskentelee yhdessä Temple Bar Gallery and Studiosin projektistudioista. TBG&S:n henkilökunta ja kuraattorit antavat vierailevalle kuraattorille tukensa verkostoitumisessa, Dublinin kuvataidekenttään integroitumisessa ja paikalliseen visuaaliseen kulttuuriin perehtymisessä.

Tavoitteena on, että kuraattori valmistelee residenssin aikana näyttelyehdotuksen TBG&S:n galleriaan huhtikuun 2012 - maaliskuun 2013 väliselle ajalle. Parhaassa tapauksessa näyttely tai projekti tuo yhteen Suomen ja Irlannin visuaalisen kulttuurin, kuitenkin sijoittuen kansainväliseen taiteen kontekstiin. Näyttelyyn on mahdollista saada tukea Näyttelyvaihtokeskus FRAME:lta.

TBG&S on merkittävin nykytaiteen tila Dublinin keskustassa.

Curator Martin Renteria Brings Finnish Performance Art to Mexico
17 December 2010

Current Helsinki International Curatorial Programme resident Martin Renteria aims to create exchange programmes between Mexican and Finnish artists and art institutions. The residency in Helsinki is organised by FRAME Finnish Fund for Art Exchange and HIAP - Helsinki International Artist-in-residence Programme.

“In Mexico there are many artists, but no performing spaces, supporting organisations or budgets. The performance art scene in Finland is very different. Active live art centres such as Perfo! in Pori, Platform in Vaasa, Turku and Tampere as well as Là-bas and New Art Contact in Helsinki are very focused, knowing the needs of the artists”, says Martin Renteria, currently studying the Finnish live art curating scene in Helsinki.

During his residency, the curator focuses on researching Finnish performance artists and planning an exchange between Finnish and Mexican performance artists. Finnish artists already confirmed for his international performance art festival ‘Transmuted 2011’ are Roi Vaara, Willem Wilhelmus, Irma Luhta and Suvi Parilla. The 10-month-long performance art festival organised in February-November 2011 in Mexico will feature 130 artists from 50 countries around the world.

A performing artist himself, Renteria has performed in Suomenlinna and Vaasa during his residency. Using his body, he plays with universal concepts such as space, power, balance, time and uncertainty.

“I like to explore time, space, the relation between the present and the future in our personal lives – the psychological perception of time. The psychological perception of time in Finland is completely different than anywhere else. My upcoming performance will explore this question, in a slightly sarcastic and ironic way.”

Martin Renteria will perform at the performance art event organised by NYTE ry in 3H+K Gallery in Pori 17 December. Finnish artists include Heidi Montti, Teemu Kilpeläinen, Tiia-Mari Aalto, Aapo Korkeaoja and Peter Rosvik.

The Helsinki International Curatorial Programme is organised by FRAME Finnish Fund for Art Exchange and HIAP – Helsinki International Artist-in-residence Programme.

Call for Applications: Curator Residency in Noisy-le-Sec, France
29 November 2010

La Galerie, a non profit Contemporary Art Centre located in the suburbs of Paris, hosts each year a foreign curator in residence for a period of three months. First organised in 2006, the aim of the residency is to put on an exhibition at La Galerie within the context of a public art centre, and to meet artists and professionals working in the contemporary art field in France.

Founded in 1999, La Galerie offers a programme based on the notion of art as a sensory experience and a reflection of our relation to the world through a conceptual approach. Four exhibitions a year (two monographic, two thematic) offer hitherto unseen works by internationally recognized artists together with those of emerging French artists.

The centre's main activities are to produce art works, publish bilingual reference publications, host artists and curators in residence and develop educational activities in relation to the artistic programme.

Residency dates: 7 April – 9 July 2011
Exhibition dates: 28 May– 23 July 2011

Salla Tykkä: Airs Above Ground at The Hayward Gallery
17 November 2010

airsabovethe ground3

The Hayward Gallery Project Space at the Southbank Centre in London presents 'Airs Above the Ground' (2010), a new film by the Finnish artist Salla Tykkä.

The film focuses on the Lipizzan horse, the oldest extant pedigree breed in Europe. The stallions are bred to perform haute école or 'high school' classical dressage, including the stylized and highly controlled jumps and poses known as 'airs above the ground'.

Featuring footage of young foals running through seemingly wild woodland and adult stallions completing balletic feats of dressage, Tykkä's film explores the uncertain line between nature and culture. It might also be read as an investigation into past and present anxieties regarding class, race, and (genetic) destiny.

Salla Tykkä was born in 1973 in Helsinki, Finland, where she lives and works today. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki 2003. She has been working with photography, video and film since 1996, and she participated the Venice Biennale 2001.

The exhibition is curated by Tom Morton and supported by FRAME Finnish Fund for Art Exchange.

Jussi Niva: Timely Remains
21 October 2010

niva_kirja

Jussi Niva: Timely Remains -kirja esittelee kuvataiteilija Jussi Nivan maalaustuotantoa 1990-luvulta tähän päivään. Kahden kirjoittajan artikkelit ja niiden lomittainen teoskuvasarjojen esitys hahmottaa kuvaa tilallisesti moniulotteisesta taidemaalarista.

Kirjan pääkirjoittaja on Hollannin taide- ja tiedeakatemian professori Miele Bal, joka on tunnettu mm. lukuisista analyyttistä teoksistaan nykytaiteen, barokin ja feminismin saroilta. Artikkeli  "Timely Remains" avaa Nivan uudemman tuotannon maalauksissa tapahtuvaa ajan ja tilan käsitteiden monitasoista esitystä sekä abstraktion tulkintaa.

Toisen kirjoittajan, Inkamaija Itiän artikkeli "Esittämisen tila ja jälkimoderni näyttämö: Jussi Nivan Exposet" analysoi Nivan varhaisempien teossarjojen näyttämöllisyyttä panoraaman ja montaasin käsittein.

Kirjan koko 25 x 29 cm, 200 sivua, kovat kannet, lankasidonta, 62 teoskuvaa, neliväripainatus
